Rugby Live Stream Free in NZ: 6 Legal Ways to Watch (2026)

More rugby is free to watch in New Zealand in 2026 than in years: every NPC match live on TVNZ+, Friday Super Rugby on Sky Open, and All Blacks tests delayed on Three. Here is every legal free option.

Rugby players in a muddy ruck, the kind of match you can watch with a rugby live stream free in NZ

Finding a rugby live stream free in New Zealand used to mean a sketchy website full of pop-ups. In 2026 you can do it legally, in HD, on your own TV. NZ Rugby’s new broadcast deals put every provincial match on TVNZ+ at no cost, Sky shows a Super Rugby game free each Friday, and All Blacks tests are replayed free on Three the same night.

This guide covers every legal free option, what each one includes, how to watch it on a TV, and what you still have to pay for. It was checked on 30 September 2026, with the NPC in its final weeks.

Rugby live stream free in NZ: the quick answer

Competition Free option Live or delayed Where
Bunnings NPC (all 77 matches, finals included) Yes Live TVNZ+, some matches on TVNZ 1
Farah Palmer Cup Yes Live TVNZ+, TVNZ 1
Heartland Championship finals Yes Live TVNZ+
Super Rugby Pacific One Friday match a week Live start, falls behind with ad breaks Sky Open, ThreeNow app
All Blacks tests (2026) Yes Delayed, a few hours Three, ThreeNow
Selected marquee matches Occasionally Live Free Sky Sport Now day pass
Highlights, documentaries Yes On demand NZR+, All Blacks YouTube

The pattern is simple. Provincial rugby is free and live. Super Rugby is partly free. All Blacks tests are free, but not live. Watching the All Blacks live still needs Sky.

1. NPC and Farah Palmer Cup: a free rugby live stream on TVNZ+

The biggest change in 2026 is provincial rugby. Under a deal announced by NZ Rugby in August 2025, TVNZ became the free-to-air home of provincial rugby from 2026. All 93 provincial matches are available live and free on TVNZ+, and TVNZ 1 shows three a week in regular time slots.

Those 93 matches, every one a rugby live stream free to watch, break down as follows, according to the Otago Rugby Football Union’s summary:

  • 77 Bunnings NPC matches: 70 round-robin games plus 7 finals
  • 12 Farah Palmer Cup matches: regular season and semi-finals, often as double-headers with the NPC
  • 2 Farah Palmer Cup finals
  • 2 Heartland Championship finals

Sky also shows every one of these matches live. The deal is “co-exclusive”, which is why the same game can be on Sky Sport and TVNZ+ at once. If you have Sky, nothing changes. If you don’t, this is the easiest rugby live stream free of charge anywhere in the country.

How to watch the NPC free on TVNZ+

  1. Create a free TVNZ+ account on the TVNZ website or app. It takes a minute.
  2. Install the TVNZ+ app on your TV. It’s on most smart TVs sold in New Zealand and on popular streaming devices. TVNZ’s help pages list every supported model.
  3. Open the Live section at kickoff or find the match under the sport category.
  4. Watch the replay later if you missed it. Matches are usually added on demand after the final whistle.

If your TV has no TVNZ+ app, cast it from your phone, or plug in a streaming stick. Our IPTV box guide covers the current streaming devices on sale in New Zealand.

2. Super Rugby Pacific free on Sky Open

Sky Open is Sky’s free-to-air channel. It was called Prime until it was renamed in August 2023. For the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, Sky Open showed one Friday night match free each week. That was 16 games in total, running from the Highlanders v Crusaders opener on 13 February to Crusaders v Hurricanes on 29 May, according to ScreenScribe.

Two details matter if you’re using Sky Open as your rugby live stream free option:

  • Live start, delayed finish. The broadcast begins live at kickoff, but ad breaks are inserted during play, so it gradually falls behind the real match. If you follow scores on your phone, mute notifications.
  • Sky Open is also on ThreeNow. Sky Open now streams in the free ThreeNow app, so you can watch on phones, laptops and smart TVs without an aerial.

Sky Open is on Freeview through an aerial or satellite, so any TV with a Freeview tuner receives it free. The remaining Super Rugby matches each weekend, including most finals, are on Sky Sport.

The Super Rugby season has finished for 2026. Expect a similar Friday free-to-air slot when it returns in February 2027, and check Sky’s announcements in January.

3. All Blacks tests: free on Three, but delayed

All Blacks tests are the hardest rugby to find free and live. Sky holds the rights exclusively until 2030. In 2026, though, Sky has put the tests on free-to-air TV after a short delay.

Sky owns Three, the former TV3, having bought it in 2025. For the 2026 home tests against France, Italy and Ireland, Three and ThreeNow showed each match delayed: about two hours for the 7pm kickoffs and about four hours for the 5pm Wellington test. Sky then confirmed that every remaining All Blacks match and test in 2026 would be shown free, delayed, on Three and ThreeNow. On Sky’s announcement, that should cover the November northern tour.

How to make a delayed test feel live:

  • Don’t check your phone. Turn off sports app notifications and mute group chats for the evening.
  • Watch on ThreeNow if you can’t be home at broadcast time. The replay stays available afterwards.
  • For overnight northern tour tests, the delayed broadcast often suits New Zealand viewers better than a 3am live kickoff anyway.

If you have to watch live and there’s no rugby live stream free for that test, the cheapest legal option is a Sky Sport Now day pass at $29.99 for 24 hours. Our Sky Sport Now pass guide explains when a day pass beats a month.

4. Free Sky Sport Now day passes for big matches

Sky occasionally unlocks a match for free on Sky Sport Now, usually to launch a big tour or event. In 2026 Sky gave away a free day pass for the opening match of the All Blacks’ tour of South Africa, and the All Blacks’ own website promoted the free login.

These offers:

  • Cover one match or one day, not a season
  • Need a Sky Sport Now account, so sign up early rather than at kickoff
  • Are announced at short notice, through Sky Sport’s and the All Blacks’ social media channels

They’re a bonus, not a plan for getting a rugby live stream free every week. But following Sky Sport NZ and the All Blacks on social media is the only way to catch them.

5. Highlights and replays: NZR+ and YouTube

Not every free option is a live stream. If you’ve missed a match or just want the key moments:

  • NZR+, NZ Rugby’s own streaming platform, has free New Zealand content around the clock: highlights, documentaries and behind-the-scenes series. According to NZ Rugby, it had more than 320,000 subscribers by August 2025. Live matches on NZR+ are a paid product for viewers in over 50 countries outside New Zealand, not inside it.
  • The All Blacks YouTube channel, with more than 1.2 million subscribers, posts official highlights, press conferences and features.
  • TVNZ+ and ThreeNow keep full replays of the matches they broadcast for a period afterwards.

6. Club, school and grassroots rugby

Below provincial level, a lot of rugby is streamed free by the people running it. Many provincial unions and clubs stream club finals and some club matches on their Facebook or YouTube pages. School first XV competitions often have streamed fixtures too.

Check your local union’s website or social pages. These streams are usually a single camera with local commentary, and they’re the only way to watch a lot of community rugby from anywhere.

Rugby live stream free calendar for New Zealand

What’s free changes through the year. This is the typical pattern based on the 2026 broadcast deals. Exact dates move each season.

Months Main competition Rugby live stream free?
February–June Super Rugby Pacific One Friday match a week on Sky Open and ThreeNow
July All Blacks home tests Free but delayed on Three and ThreeNow
August–October NPC, Farah Palmer Cup Every match live and free on TVNZ+
August–September All Blacks tests and tours Free but delayed on Three and ThreeNow
October NPC and FPC finals, Heartland finals Live and free on TVNZ+
November All Blacks northern tour Free but delayed on Three and ThreeNow
December–January Off-season Highlights and documentaries on NZR+

The richest stretch for free live rugby is August to October, when the NPC is on. A rugby fan without Sky can watch a live match on TVNZ+ almost every weekend in that window.

What still isn’t free

Being clear about the limits saves a wasted search for a rugby live stream free that doesn’t exist:

  • Live All Blacks and Black Ferns tests. Sky Sport or Sky Sport Now only, unless Sky runs a free day pass.
  • Most Super Rugby Pacific matches, apart from the Friday free-to-air game.
  • The British and Irish Lions when they tour. Sky holds these rights.
  • Overseas club competitions such as Premiership Rugby, Top 14 and the URC. These rights are sold separately and aren’t free in New Zealand.

For those, the realistic choices are a Sky Sport subscription or a Sky Sport Now pass. Our Sky Sport subscription guide compares the Sky Box, Sky Pod and Sky Sport Now routes and their 2026 prices.

Why “free rugby live stream” sites aren’t worth it

Search for a free rugby live stream and you’ll find sites that claim to show every test live. They’re unlicensed. Beyond the legal issue, they’re a poor way to watch:

  • Malware and scam ads. Fake “play” buttons, pop-ups that install software, and “free signup” pages that ask for card details are common on these sites.
  • They drop out at the worst time. Unlicensed streams are taken down mid-match, often at the busiest moment.
  • Low picture quality and long delays, usually well behind the legal broadcast.
  • No TV app. Most only work in a browser, full of overlays.

A legal rugby live stream free of charge is now easy to find. With every NPC match on TVNZ+, a free Friday Super Rugby game on Sky Open and every All Blacks test on Three the same evening, the legal free options now cover a lot of what people used to hunt pirate streams for.

Getting a good picture from a free stream

A rugby live stream free of charge doesn’t have to be fuzzy. A few things make a real difference:

  • Use the TV app, not casting, where you can. The TVNZ+ and ThreeNow TV apps usually give a steadier picture than casting from a phone.
  • Use a cable if you can. Ethernet from the router to the TV or streaming stick avoids most Wi-Fi drop-outs.
  • Test before kickoff. Open the app ten minutes early, sign in and check the live section. Most match-night problems are logins and app updates.
  • Check your speed at match time. A steady 10 Mbps or so is enough for good HD. Our internet speed guide explains what different New Zealand connections deliver in the evening, and our buffering guide walks through fixes that work for any streaming app.

Watching free rugby on an older TV

You don’t need a new smart TV for any of this.

  • TVNZ 1 and Sky Open through Freeview. Any TV with a built-in Freeview tuner, or a cheap Freeview set-top box, picks up both channels through an aerial or satellite dish. No internet needed.
  • TVNZ+ and ThreeNow on a streaming stick. A current stick plugged into the HDMI port gives an older TV every free rugby app. Our IPTV box guide lists the devices on sale in New Zealand and what they cost.
  • A laptop and an HDMI cable. Open TVNZ+ or ThreeNow in the browser, connect the laptop to the TV, and you have a rugby live stream free on the big screen in two minutes.

For a household that only watches rugby, a Freeview aerial plus a streaming stick covers every free option in this guide. Both are a one-off cost with nothing to renew, and they keep working season after season.

Watching from outside New Zealand

TVNZ+, ThreeNow and Sky Open’s stream are licensed for viewers in New Zealand, so they generally won’t play overseas. For Kiwis abroad, NZR+ sells live matches in more than 50 territories. World Rugby’s RugbyPass TV streams some rugby free in several countries. Rights vary by country, so check what’s available where you are.

Where IPTV fits

We sell IPTV, so here’s where it fits honestly. IPTV is a way to receive a large lineup of live channels over the internet on the devices you own. It’s not a way around who owns the rights to a rugby match. For the competitions above, the free legal options and Sky are the direct routes. If you’re considering IPTV for the wider channel range, ask any provider, including us, exactly what’s included before you pay. Our guide to watching sport on IPTV explains how to check.

Common questions

Yes. Every NPC, Farah Palmer Cup and Heartland final match streams live and free on TVNZ+ from 2026. During the Super Rugby season, Sky Open shows one Friday night match free each week, also in the ThreeNow app. All Blacks tests are shown free but delayed on Three and ThreeNow.

Can I watch the All Blacks live for free?

Not normally. Sky holds exclusive live rights until 2030. In 2026 every All Blacks test is shown free on Three and ThreeNow a few hours after kickoff. Sky occasionally offers a free Sky Sport Now day pass for a selected match, as it did for the opening match of the 2026 South Africa tour.

Do I need a TVNZ+ account to watch the NPC?

Yes, a free TVNZ+ account. There’s no subscription or payment. Sign up once, then sign in to the TVNZ+ app on your TV, phone or computer.

When is the next rugby live stream free in NZ?

Right now it’s the NPC and Farah Palmer Cup finals on TVNZ+, which run into October. After that, the All Blacks’ November tests are shown free but delayed on Three and ThreeNow. Super Rugby’s free Friday match on Sky Open is expected back when the season starts in February 2027.

Is Sky Open free?

Yes. Sky Open is a free-to-air channel on Freeview, and it also streams in the free ThreeNow app. You don’t need a Sky subscription or a Sky Box to watch it.

Sites showing Sky-owned matches without permission are unlicensed. They also tend to carry malware and scam ads, drop out mid-match and run well behind the broadcast. The legal free options above are safer and better quality.
