Sky Sport Subscription NZ: 3 Ways to Get It and What Each Costs

You can get a Sky Sport subscription through a Sky Box, a Sky Pod or Sky Sport Now. Here is how each route works, what it really costs in 2026, and which suits your household.

Satellite dish on a corrugated iron wall, one way to get a Sky Sport subscription in NZ

A Sky Sport subscription in New Zealand comes in three forms: on a Sky Box through a satellite dish, on a Sky Pod over your broadband, or as Sky Sport Now, the stand-alone streaming service. Whichever Sky Sport subscription you choose, the live sport is the same. They differ in price, contract, equipment and recording.

This guide compares the three routes with 2026 prices, explains what each involves, and ends with a simple way to choose. Prices are in New Zealand dollars including GST and were checked on 30 September 2026. Sky has raised sport prices every year since 2024, so treat them as a snapshot.

The three ways to get a Sky Sport subscription

Sky Box Sky Pod Sky Sport Now
How it arrives Satellite dish Your broadband App on your own devices
Sky Sport price $52/month plus Sky Starter $52/month plus Sky Starter $59.99/month, $549.99/year or $29.99/day
Sky entertainment channels Yes, with Starter Yes, with Starter No, sport only
Recording Yes, built-in hard drive No, catch-up on demand instead No, replays on demand
Sky Go on other devices Included Included Not needed, the app is the service
Best for Year-round sport and TV on the main screen Sky without a dish, on fibre Seasonal fans, no box, no contract

The key point: the Sky Box and Sky Pod both need Sky Starter underneath the Sport package. Sky Sport Now doesn’t need anything else.

Route 1: a Sky Sport subscription on a Sky Box

This is the traditional Sky set-up. A dish on the roof feeds a Sky Box under the TV, and you pay monthly for your packages.

What it costs. Since 1 April 2026 the Sky Sport package has cost $52 a month. It sits on top of Sky Starter, the base package everyone needs first. Starter’s price changes with promotions, so check it on Sky’s offers page. Your monthly Sky Sport subscription is Starter plus $52, plus any other packages you add.

What you get. Every Sky Sport and ESPN channel live on the main TV, Sky’s entertainment channels through Starter, a hard drive for recording, and the Sky Go app for watching on phones, tablets and laptops.

The upsides:

  • Recording. In a country where much overseas sport airs overnight, recording to the box is a real advantage. Set it for a 3am Premier League kickoff and watch at breakfast.
  • Satellite reliability. Match-night picture quality doesn’t depend on your broadband or on how busy the neighbourhood’s connection is.
  • Everything in one place, with one remote.

The downsides:

  • Installation. A dish needs a technician. Renters need the landlord’s permission.
  • Commitment. Promotional deals typically come with a fixed term. Read the offer terms before signing.
  • Paying through the off-season, unless you remember to drop the Sport package.

Route 2: a Sky Sport subscription on a Sky Pod

The Sky Pod is Sky’s dish-free option. It’s a small Android TV device that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port and brings in Sky’s channels over your broadband connection instead of satellite.

What it costs. The same package prices as the Sky Box: Sky Starter plus the $52 Sky Sport package. The Pod itself was launched at $100 upfront, well below the cost of a Sky Box. Check Sky’s current device pricing when you order.

What you need. Fibre broadband. Sky recommends a fast fibre connection for the best experience, because every channel, including live sport, now comes over the internet.

The differences from the Sky Box:

  • No recording hard drive. You use on-demand catch-up instead of recording shows yourself.
  • No dish, no technician visit. This suits renters and apartments.
  • Your broadband matters. If your connection struggles in the evening, so will your Sky Sport subscription on a Pod.

The Sky Pod makes the most sense for fibre households that want the full Sky package without a dish and don’t mind losing local recording.

Route 3: Sky Sport Now, a subscription without a box

Sky Sport Now is Sky’s stand-alone sport streaming service. There’s no box, no Starter package and no contract. You buy a pass and watch in an app.

What it costs in 2026:

  • Day Pass: $29.99, 24 hours, no renewal
  • Month Pass: $59.99 a month
  • Premium Month Pass: $64.99 a month, adds 4K
  • Annual Pass: $549.99 a year, includes 4K
  • Sky Sport Now + Neon: $69.99 a month

All passes include the 12 Sky Sport and ESPN channels plus on-demand replays and highlights, according to the Sky Sport Now site. The app runs on most smart TVs, Apple TV, Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, PS5, phones, tablets and browsers.

The upsides: nothing to install, and you can switch the subscription off between seasons and on again for the first match. Cancelling keeps your access until the paid period ends.

The downsides: no Sky entertainment channels, no recording of your own (only Sky’s replays), no refunds on cancelling, and the monthly price is higher than the $52 Sport package on its own.

What a Sky Sport subscription really costs over a year

The monthly price of a Sky Sport subscription isn’t the whole story. What matters is what you pay over twelve months, which depends on how many months you keep the subscription.

Scenario Route Approximate yearly cost
Watches sport all year, on the main TV Sky Box or Pod: Starter plus $52 × 12 $624 plus 12 months of Starter
Watches sport all year, no box Sky Sport Now Annual Pass $549.99
Rugby season only (9 months), no box Sky Sport Now Month Pass × 9 $539.91
Super Rugby only (5 months), no box Sky Sport Now Month Pass × 5 $299.95
All Blacks tests only Sky Sport Now Day Passes $29.99 per test

The Sky Sport package costs $624 a year before Starter. Sky Sport Now’s annual pass is cheaper than that total for anyone who doesn’t also want Sky’s entertainment channels. For households that do want those channels, the box or Pod bundles everything together.

How the Sky Sport subscription price has moved

According to RNZ’s reporting, the Sky Sport package has gone up every year:

Date Sky Sport package
Before February 2024 $37.99 a month
February 2024 $42 a month
March 2025 $47 a month
1 April 2026 $52 a month

That’s a rise of about 37% in just over two years. Sky Sport Now’s month passes went up by $5 in 2026 too. Sky links the rises to sports rights and to investment such as 4K broadcasts. Its deal with New Zealand Rugby runs from 2026 to 2030, so expect the pattern to continue.

What you can watch without a Sky Sport subscription

Before paying, check whether what you want is already free. More rugby is free-to-air in 2026 than in years.

  • Super Rugby Pacific: one Friday night match a week was free on Sky Open during the 2026 season, and Sky Open now also streams in the ThreeNow app
  • All Blacks tests: shown delayed on Three and ThreeNow for the rest of the 2026 season, typically a couple of hours after kickoff
  • NPC, Farah Palmer Cup and Heartland: under NZ Rugby’s deal with TVNZ, all 93 provincial matches stream live and free on TVNZ+, with three a week on TVNZ 1

If those cover what you watch, you may not need a Sky Sport subscription at all. Our free rugby streaming guide lists every legal free option in detail.

How to pay less for a Sky Sport subscription

Match the subscription to the season. On any route, the biggest saving is not paying for sport in months you don’t watch it. With a Sky Box or Pod, drop the Sport package over the quiet months if your terms allow. With Sky Sport Now, cancel after the last match you care about and restart before the next season.

Go annual if you watch all year. Sky Sport Now’s $549.99 annual pass costs less than the $624 a year the Sport package alone costs, and it includes 4K. It only works out if you don’t want Sky’s other channels.

Look at new-customer offers. Sky regularly runs discounted deals on Starter and Sport for new customers, usually with a fixed term. Work out the price once the discount ends, not just the headline.

Check whether you’re paying for sport twice. A common trap is a household paying for the Sky Sport package on the box and for Sky Sport Now on someone’s phone. Sky Go is already included with a box subscription for watching on other devices.

Ask before you cancel. Customers often report being offered a better price when they call to leave. It’s worth asking, but don’t count on it.

Watching a Sky Sport subscription on more than one TV

Sky Box. The box serves one TV. For other rooms and devices, box and Pod customers use the included Sky Go app on a phone, tablet or laptop, which can be cast to a second TV. Extra Sky boxes are a separate cost, so check Sky’s current pricing.

Sky Pod. Similar to the box, but everything already comes over broadband, so your connection has to carry every stream in the house.

Sky Sport Now. Install the app on each TV or streaming device and sign in with the same account. Sky limits how many devices can stream at once on one account, so check the current limit in Sky Sport Now’s help centre before planning a two-screen weekend.

A Sky Sport subscription for a bar, café or gym

Every consumer Sky Sport subscription, including Sky Sport Now, is for private viewing at home. Showing matches to customers or staff needs a commercial subscription through Sky Business, priced by venue. Using a home subscription on a public screen breaches Sky’s terms.

Which route is most reliable on match night?

For a big match, picture quality and reliability matter more than a few dollars.

  • Sky Box: satellite is unaffected by evening broadband congestion, but heavy rain can briefly interrupt satellite reception
  • Sky Pod and Sky Sport Now: both depend on your broadband and your home Wi-Fi. On fibre with a cabled connection to the TV, both work very well. On a congested connection or weak Wi-Fi, expect the odd stutter

If you stream, plug in an Ethernet cable where you can and test the night before. Our guide to fixing buffering covers the checks, and they apply to any streaming service.

Signing up and cancelling

Sky Box or Sky Pod. Order through Sky online or by phone. You choose Sky Starter, add the Sport package, and book installation (Box) or receive the device (Pod). To drop Sky Sport later, change your packages in your Sky account or call Sky. Check your terms first, because fixed-term deals can carry early exit costs.

Sky Sport Now. Sign up on the Sky Sport Now website, pay by card and install the app. Cancel any time on the Subscriptions page. You keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for, but unused time isn’t refunded.

Moving between routes. Many households switch from a Sky Box to Sky Sport Now after deciding they only really used Sky for sport. If you do, cancel the box packages after your last big match, and start Sky Sport Now the day before the next one. That avoids paying for both at once.

Which Sky Sport subscription is right for you?

Choose a Sky Box if you watch sport most of the year, want Sky’s entertainment channels as well, and value recording. It’s also the most dependable on match night if your broadband is slow or shared.

Choose a Sky Pod if you want the full Sky package but can’t or won’t install a dish, and you have good fibre. Accept that you’ll use catch-up rather than recordings.

Choose Sky Sport Now if you mainly care about sport, follow one or two seasons a year, and want to switch off between them. Take the annual pass if you watch year-round.

Choose nothing yet if the free options cover you. Friday night Super Rugby on Sky Open, the NPC on TVNZ+ and delayed tests on Three may be enough.

Where IPTV fits

People often weigh a Sky Sport subscription against IPTV. They’re different products, so here’s the fair comparison.

A Sky Sport subscription is the licensed home of the All Blacks, Super Rugby and most of what New Zealanders pay for sport to watch, with New Zealand commentary and production. If that’s the priority, Sky is the direct route.

IPTV is a broad lineup of live channels from many countries, delivered over the internet to devices you already own, and typically paid for once rather than monthly. It suits households that want a wide range of international channels, news and entertainment. Some households run both. If a particular competition is what matters, ask any IPTV provider, including us, whether it’s included before you pay. Common questions

How much is a Sky Sport subscription per month in 2026?

On a Sky Box or Sky Pod, the Sky Sport package is $52 a month on top of the Sky Starter base package. As a stand-alone stream, Sky Sport Now costs $59.99 a month, $64.99 for the Premium (4K) Month Pass, or $549.99 a year.

Can I get Sky Sport without Sky Starter?

Yes, through Sky Sport Now. It’s a stand-alone streaming subscription that doesn’t need Sky Starter, a Sky Box or a dish. On a Sky Box or Sky Pod, Sky Starter is required before you can add Sky Sport.

Do I need a satellite dish for a Sky Sport subscription?

Only with a Sky Box. The Sky Pod brings Sky’s channels over fibre broadband without a dish, and Sky Sport Now runs as an app on your TV, streaming device, phone or computer.

Can I record sport with Sky Sport Now?

Not yourself. Sky Sport Now includes on-demand replays and highlights, but there’s no recording. If recording overnight matches matters to you, a Sky Box is the only Sky option with a built-in hard drive.

Is a Sky Sport subscription worth it for rugby alone?

For a committed rugby fan, usually yes, because Sky holds the All Blacks, Super Rugby Pacific and the live NPC rights through 2030. But check the free options first: provincial rugby is live and free on TVNZ+, one Super Rugby match a week was free on Sky Open in 2026, and All Blacks tests are shown delayed on Three. If you don’t need to watch live, a Sky Sport subscription may not be needed.

Is Sky Go included with a Sky Sport subscription?

Sky Go is included for Sky Box and Sky Pod customers, letting you watch your packages on other devices. Sky Sport Now customers don’t need Sky Go, because Sky Sport Now is already an app.
