Which IPTV Player App Should You Use? A Straight Comparison

TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, XCIPTV, IBO Player and the rest — what each is genuinely good at, which devices they run on, and which to pick for your situation.

Something that surprises people new to IPTV: the service and the app are separate. Your subscription gives you a server URL, username and password, and you choose which app to plug those into.

That is genuinely useful. If an app annoys you, switch — your subscription is unaffected and your details work in any of them. Here is how the main ones actually compare.

The short answer

  • Android TV box or Fire TV Stick, and you want recording: TiviMate
  • First setup, want it simple: IPTV Smarters Pro
  • iPhone, iPad or Apple TV: Smarters Player Lite
  • Samsung or LG Smart TV: IBO Player or Duplex IPTV
  • Want more control than Smarters offers: XCIPTV

TiviMate

Runs on: Android, Android TV, Fire TV. Not iOS, not Apple TV, not Smart TVs.

The best programme guide of any IPTV player, by some distance. It looks and behaves like a proper TV guide rather than a list of channels.

Strengths: excellent EPG, the only one with genuinely good scheduled and series recording, deep customisation of layout and channel groups, very stable.

Weaknesses: Android only. The free version is limited — recording and multiple playlists need the paid Premium upgrade. Slightly more to learn than Smarters.

Choose it if you are on Android or Fire TV and either care about the guide or want recording. From New Zealand, with so much overseas sport airing overnight, recording is a bigger deal than it first appears.

IPTV Smarters Pro

Runs on: Android, Android TV, Fire TV, Windows, Mac. An iOS variant exists under a different name.

The most widely used, and usually the easiest first setup.

Strengths: simple, clear layout for Live TV, Movies and Series, works almost everywhere, free, straightforward Xtream Codes login.

Weaknesses: the guide is functional rather than good. Recording is basic — start and stop rather than real scheduling. Development has been inconsistent over the years.

Choose it if this is your first IPTV setup and you want the shortest path to watching something.

XCIPTV

Runs on: Android, Android TV, Fire TV.

A solid middle ground between the two above.

Strengths: more configurable than Smarters, decent guide, reasonable recording, actively maintained.

Weaknesses: less polished than TiviMate, smaller community so fewer answers when you get stuck.

Choose it if Smarters feels limiting but you do not want to pay for TiviMate Premium.

Smarters Player Lite

Runs on: iPhone, iPad, Apple TV.

The default choice on Apple hardware, largely because the alternatives are thin.

Strengths: clean, in the App Store so it updates properly, same app across iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

Weaknesses: no recording — that is tvOS and iOS restricting storage access, not the app’s fault. Fewer options than the Android players.

Choose it if you are on Apple hardware. See our Apple TV guide.

GSE Smart IPTV

Runs on: iOS, Apple TV, Android.

The main alternative on Apple devices.

Strengths: more settings than Smarters Player Lite, supports several playlist formats.

Weaknesses: the interface is dated and less intuitive.

Choose it if Smarters Player Lite is not working for you on Apple hardware.

IBO Player and Duplex IPTV

Runs on: Samsung and LG Smart TVs, some Android.

These exist because Samsung and LG app stores are restrictive, and they are what is available there.

Strengths: install directly from your TV’s app store, no extra hardware, MAC-address activation means nothing long to type with a TV remote.

Weaknesses: basic compared to the Android players. No recording. Activation is not instant since the MAC must be registered. Some have a small one-off fee.

Choose it if you want to use your TV without adding a box. Our Samsung guide covers the process.

Perfect Player and VLC

Worth mentioning briefly. Perfect Player is an older Android player, still functional, largely superseded. VLC plays IPTV streams but has no guide, no proper channel management and no Xtream Codes login — fine for testing whether a stream works, not for daily viewing.

What actually matters when choosing

Does it run on your device? This eliminates most of the list immediately. Apple hardware rules out TiviMate; a Samsung TV rules out everything except the TV-store apps.

Do you need recording? If yes, you need Android and realistically TiviMate. This alone may decide what hardware you buy.

How much do you care about the guide? If you flick through channels, TiviMate’s guide is a genuine daily improvement. If you go straight to the same four channels, it does not matter.

Free or paid? Most are free. TiviMate Premium is a modest one-off. Some Smart TV apps have a small activation fee.

You can change your mind

Worth repeating: your subscription works in any of them. Install two, try both, keep the one you prefer. There is no cost to switching and nothing to reconfigure at our end.

If a particular channel stutters in one app and plays fine in another, that is also a useful diagnostic — see our buffering guide.

The setup guide lists which apps suit which device, with the steps for each.

Common questions

Which IPTV player app is best?

It depends on your device. TiviMate has the best guide and the only strong recording, but is Android and Fire TV only. IPTV Smarters Pro is the simplest first setup and runs almost everywhere. On Apple hardware, Smarters Player Lite. On Samsung or LG, IBO Player or Duplex.

Is TiviMate free?

There is a free version, but it is limited. Recording and multiple playlists require the Premium upgrade, which is a modest one-off cost. If recording is the reason you want TiviMate, budget for Premium — the free tier will not do it.

Can I switch IPTV apps without losing my subscription?

Yes. Your subscription and the app are separate things — the same server URL, username and password work in any player. Install a second app, try it, and keep whichever you prefer. Nothing needs changing at the provider’s end.
